Welcome to Hunterhouse College

Welcome to Hunterhouse College, a truly special learning community to be a part of.

Choosing a school for our children is one of the most important decisions that we make as parents, and it’s vital to find somewhere that they can thrive. Somewhere they can be themselves, follow their curiosity and enjoy learning. Somewhere that they can make friends for life, get involved and pursue their passions, while being personally supported every step of the way.

For all of those reasons, we invite you to consider Hunterhouse for your daughter.

Our vision is that all students will learn in a caring environment and will fulfil their potential both personally and academically. It’s easy for me to stand here and say that, but how do we do this in practice? We embody our core values through the Hunterhouse CARES vision. This stands for five key areas that students and staff members alike are focussed on: Community, Achievement, Relationships, Expectations and Support.

We work hard to foster a strong sense of belonging in our relatively small student body of around 750. Each girl is known and understood by her teachers, with a dedicated form tutor, creating a tight-knit community where everybody belongs and nobody gets forgotten, or lost in the crowd.

Throughout their time at Hunterhouse, students are encouraged to take on leadership roles such as Peer Mentors, Subject Ambassadors and House Captains. This allows them to grow in confidence and creates a bond between younger and older students. Student Voice really matters to us, and we seek feedback and ideas from Year 8s right through to Year 14s, listening to their thoughts on how to improve their learning and all aspects of their experience here. Students even have a say in the recruitment process for new staff, giving them a sense of shared commitment to and ownership of their school.

We’re also committed to building strong partnerships with parents and families, as we communicate and work together to ensure that each student has everything she needs to thrive.

We are immensely proud of the people that our girls become by the end of their time here. They achieve more than they ever believed possible, and they carry with them out into the world deeply-held values that enable them to make a positive difference wherever they go, both in their personal interactions and in the often hugely meaningful impact they have on our wider society.

We are blessed with a talented team of gifted and inspirational teachers, who deliver a curriculum that enables every student to progress in their learning, no matter what their initial confidence level or starting point in each subject. Our teachers are supported to continually reflect on and improve their practice, so that we can add value on a daily basis to every student.

We are a forward-looking school, striving to prepare our young people for an ever-changing world. Our curriculum equips them with transferrable skills to prepare them for every conceivable career path, even to future jobs that don’t exist yet!

The quality of relationships between staff and students is the cornerstone of our school. Our staff really do aim to make a difference to each student, and this is evident in every interaction in our corridors, classrooms, sports fields, workshops and music and drama studios. We are all committed to fostering a strong culture of empathy and mutual respect, as everybody demonstrates kindness and tolerance to those around them.

We believe that having high expectations in all aspects of school life is fundamental to achieving success. Our students exemplify qualities like punctuality, good manners, smart presentation and positive treatment of each other as those qualities are modelled to them by our staff. We love to celebrate and reward our students’ successes, and help them to build resilience through challenges. By recognising their achievements, often publicly, we motivate them to excel and to aim high in all areas of school life.

As a learning community, we are dedicated to continuous improvement in all aspects. We are passionate about moving forwards, embracing change and leaving no stone unturned in working together to improve the educational experience for each young person.

Our high expectations are matched by high support to enable each student to meet her potential. Everybody receives educational support, with learning guidance and comprehensive careers advice. This is tailored to their own strengths, areas for growth and interests, and we are ambitious for them in every step of their educational journey.

At Hunterhouse we recognise the critical role that a young person’s well-being plays in their ability to engage and thrive academically and personally. Our first-rate pastoral care is designed to prioritise the happiness and mental health of our students. They tell us that they feel safe, cared for and ready to learn through the support we provide.
