Double Award and Single Award Science

Double Award and Single Award Science (CCEA)

All students study Science at GCSE, following either the Double Award Science course (worth 2 GCSEs) or Single Award Science Course (worth 1 GCSE). Biology, Chemistry and Physics are studied in both options.

Double Award Science: Students will study the separate Sciences and at the end of Year 11 complete a module in each of the Sciences. In year 12 students follow the same pattern again completing a module for each Science. In addition, there is a practical task which in carried out during Year 12.

Single Award Science: Students will study the separate Sciences and will complete 1 module examination in March of Year 11 and another in November of Year 12. A final module examination and practical task at the end of Year 12 will also be completed.

Why study Science?

Science is not just a subject but it’s also a way of thinking: science graduates have been trained to think critically, research properly and be guided by the evidence. These are critical workplace skills and employers value the creativity and problem-solving skills of science graduates.
