Curriculum Overview

The core aim of the curriculum at Hunterhouse is to encourage all students to learn in a caring environment to allow them to achieve their academic potential. The organisation and delivery of the curriculum is designed to encourage individual progress through the provision of different pathways, to provide choice and flexibility where appropriate and to ensure smooth progression between the Key Stages.

KS3

Throughout Key Stage 3, the curriculum is broad and balanced. Students are taught mainly in Form Groups but are subdivided into smaller groups for Science and practical subjects.

Students in Key Stage 3 study the following subjects:

Core Curriculum:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science – Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught separately in Y10
  • Learning for Life and Work – delivered through off-timetable days in Y10
  • Religious Studies

Additional:

  • Art
  • Drama – delivered through the English curriculum in Years 9 & 10
  • Geography
  • History
  • Home Economics
  • ICT – delivered through off-timetable days in Y9
  • Languages – three languages are studied in Y8, two in Years 9 &10
  • Music
  • Physical Education & Games
  • Technology and Design

KS4

In Key Stage 4, students follow a curriculum consisting of a combination of Core and Optional courses. Most students will study 9.5 courses, although a small number may study either 8.5, 9 or 10.5.

At GCSE level, we aim to provide a range of courses which suit the needs and interests of our students. We review our curriculum annually. The College exceeds the requirements of the Entitlement Framework at Key Stage 4 level with an appropriate blend of courses, including STEM courses.

Core Curriculum (5.5 GCSEs and/or equivalent):

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Double Award Science or Single Award Science plus CCEA Occupational Studies
  • Learning for Life and Work
  • Short Course Religious Studies (half a GCSE)
  • Physical Education and Games (non-GCSE)

Additional Courses:

Students choose four from this list through individual consultation with specialist staff. Students wishing to choose three may choose Supported Study as their fourth choice in consultation with the appropriate member of the Student Progress team:

Sixth Form

Students in Sixth Form follow an appropriate blend of General and Applied courses, chosen through individual meetings with specialist staff. All students will study either three or four courses depending on the number of GCSE points they have. As with GCSE, the College exceeds the requirements of the Entitlement Framework in Sixth Form and the curriculum offer is reviewed annually. Over the last few years, a number of new courses have been added, reflecting the changing needs and interests of our students.
