Choice is built into the curriculum at different stages of a pupil’s education.
At the end of Year 8 for example, pupils choose which second language to pursue while different pathways are available at the start of the GCSE and A Level programmes.
The Careers Department offers ongoing guidance as girls seek to determine their career paths. Individual guidance interviews are available to all pupils from Year 10 upwards and are particularly important at the key transition points.
The Careers Library provides information on careers and courses beyond school and this is supplemented by talks, work placements, conferences, workshops and a biennial Careers and Higher Education Convention. Pupils also have opportunities to access specialist counselling from the Careers Service of the Department of Employment and Learning.
The Careers Department supports the Learning for Life and Work programme at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, and the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness programme at Key Stage 5. At each level girls are encouraged to analyse their own strengths and ambitions, to research a variety of career and course options and to gain an insight into working and student life. These skills of Personal Career Planning help girls to make successful key decisions within school and to approach their career paths with greater confidence.
“Hunterhouse College opened the door to many opportunities during my years spent there. The excellence of the teaching staff and the friendly atmosphere made it an ideal environment both to learn and work in.
The school offers many extracurricular activities, which are a must to get involved in. My highlight was being involved in the musical activities. The Music Department is well-run, offering a wide range of groups to take part in, under the expertise of highly qualified staff.”
